Poor Ethan!
We were playing at Grandma and Papa Packs. Ethan, of course, had his Batman outfit on and was jumping around wrestling with Daddy and Austin. Things were getting a little crazy and Mommy said to calm things down and Daddy said, hey Batman lets see a Batman jump. Ethan jumped off the couch and we heard a snap. Ethan immediately started screaming and holding his arm. We knew there was a problem. We left Austin and baby Braden (who we were babysitting) with Grandma and Papa and left for the ER. Aunt Jessica works in the radiology department at lakeview so we decided to take him there. Jessica was nice enough to call the ER and tell them who we were and what happened. Then she met us there to help speed up the ER process. They said it was broken somewhere because he had a positive fat pad sign, but they couldn't tell exactly where it was broken. The gave Ethan some Versed to help with the pain while they casted his arm. We knew it was working when he started to "beep" when his O2 monitor did. He was laughing and laughing. Jeff thought it was hilarious and mentioned that Ethan was acting drunk. Ethan yelled "I'm drunk hahahaha". It was so funny. They put a cast on and told us to follow-up with an ortho guy the next week. So they sent us home with a lortab prescription and we went to find Ethan some dinner and an all night pharmacy. He absolutely refused his Lortab because it was nasty tasting, so we would give him a spoonful of carmel then the medicine, but he isn't dumb and still spit it all over us. After a few days he was complaining more and more of pain and wasn't using it anymore so we took him to the children's hospital to be re-evaluated. They took new x-rays and were debating whether or not he needed emergent surgery to pin his growth plate in place. They decided it could wait until we got home, but told us to see the pediatric ortho doctor as soon as we got home. We called and got an appointment at the pediatric ortho clinic for the day we got home. They looked at the x-rays, took new x-rays and re-casted it. They told us to come back in a week to reevaluate. We went back and they said it wasn't broken at all and he was fine. So we went from emergent surgery to nothing wrong. Ethan is one tough kid and didn't want the cast on so he didn't complain about it. It took 4 months for him to start using his left arm again and still guards it. Jeff did a presentation about the fat pad sign for his radiology rotation in march and all the radiologists agreed his arm was definitely broken and they were surprised he didn't have his growth plate pinned. We are hoping there is no permanent damage. I guess we will see. Thankfully the broken arm has slowed him down a little and he thinks before he jumps off of things (he still jumps, but he makes sure to land on his right side). What a tough little guy!
